Perfection of Understanding – Re-imagining Jingdezhen
Perfection of Understanding brings together a group of Chinese & Hong Kong sound artists with UK-based ceramic artists, part of Interbeing, an exploration of collaborative ceramic and sound art practice in Britain and China, produced by The Ceramic House that took place throughout 2021.
Originally conceived as a physical residency at Jingdezhen Ceramic Institute, its eventual manifestation took the form of a remote commission uniting the artists through reimagining Jingdezhen, the renowned capital of porcelain, rendered inaccessible by a pandemic. A place that has become in our collective imagination, a mythical destination.
Each artist was invited to explore an idea of Jingdezhen as it related to their own practice and to produce a sonic artwork or piece of music for inclusion on the album Perfection of Understanding which accompanies the book of the same name, a publication concluding the Interbeing project. The ceramic artists were invited to do the same, producing work in any visual media in response. The cover image is Valeria Nascimento’s contribution, an arrangement of 608 handcrafted porcelain paperclay pieces with red glaze.
In addition, the album features Joseph Young’s field recordings from Jingdezhen, China, which offer an immersive impression of the soundscape of this seemingly remote place.
